When AI Is the Buyer Part 1: AI Visibility for SaaS Products

You worked on your SEO for months, maybe years. You earned backlinks, published content consistently, and climbed to Google’s first page.

Then a founder in your niche mentions that they asked AI to recommend a tool for exactly the problem you solve.

Your product did not come up.

A competitor with half your traffic showed up instead.

According to a research published by G2, 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with AI chatbots instead of Google. That number was 29% just a year ago. The shift is accelerating, and it is rewriting the rules of SaaS discovery.

I have been consulting SaaS companies on product marketing for years, and this is the most disorienting shift I have ever seen. Because it invalidates assumptions most founders have built their go-to-market strategy around.

This article is the first in a six-part series called When AI Is the Buyer, where I will break down what AI visibility means for SaaS marketing and what you can do about it.

Let’s start with the most urgent question:

Why is your SaaS product invisible to AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude?

What Is AI Visibility? Why Does AI Visibility Matter for SaaS?

AI visibility is whether AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini mention, recommend, or accurately describe your product when a user asks a relevant question. It is different from traditional search engine visibility because AI tools do not return a list of ten blue links. They return one or two names in a conversational answer. As G2’s Chief Innovation Officer Tim Sanders puts it:

Google compressed discovery into the first page of results.

Now, AI chatbots are compressing it into a single answer.

In my article Why and How: SEO is a Marathon, Not a Sprint, I wrote about how SEO compounds through consistency and patience. That principle still holds for Google. But the rules that determine which products appear in AI-generated answers are fundamentally different.

The disconnect between Google rankings and AI visibility:

  • 44% of brands in Googles top ten receive zero ChatGPT citations (study of 150 B2B SaaS companies)
  • 81% of brands that ChatGPT does recommend are not in Googles top ten at all

Your Google ranking and your AI visibility are two separate scorecards, and most SaaS founders are only tracking one.

Why Does AI Ignore SaaS Products That Rank Well on Google?

AI models do not rank pages the way Google does. They synthesize information. Google evaluates pages based on backlinks, keyword density, and domain authority. AI models consume content from across the web and generate answers by predicting the most useful response. The factors that make you rank on Google, though similar, are not exactly the factors that make ChatGPT or Claude recommend your brand.

An arXiv study of 112 Product Hunt startups across 2,240 queries revealed the 30:1 discovery gap: ChatGPT recognized 99% of products tested but recommended only 3% organically. The AI knows your SaaS product exists. It just does not think you are the best answer.

So what makes AI to recommend a SaaS product?

The same arXiv study found these predictors of AI recommendation:

  • +0.40 correlation for Reddit presence. It means that products with more Reddit mentions and discussions had a moderately strong tendency to be recommended by ChatGPT. It was the single most predictive factor the researchers measured.
  • +0.32 correlation for backlinks. It means the number of backlinks pointing to a product's website is also correlated with AI recommendations, but less strongly than Reddit.
  • +0.23 correlation for social proof (things like reviews, testimonials, user counts mentioned online). It has a weaker but still positive association.

AI models are heavily influenced by community discussions and user-generated mentions. If your brand is talked about on Reddit, in Slack communities, or in niche forums, AI tools are more likely to mention it. If your entire marketing strategy lives on your blog and your backlink profile, you are missing the signals AI pays attention to.

How Is AI Search Changing B2B SaaS Buyer Behavior?

AI chatbots are not just changing where buyers search. They are changing who buyers choose. G2’s 2026 AI Search Insight Report, surveying 1,076 B2B buyers, paints a clear picture:

  • 87% say AI tools have fundamentally changed how they research products
  • 69% chose a different vendor than planned based on AI chatbot guidance
  • 33% purchased from a vendor they had never heard of before

AI is making introductions that traditional SaaS marketing channels never would have as well as influencing purchase decisions.

The conversion advantage is huge. An analysis of 680 million AI citations found:

  • AI search traffic converts at 14.2% vs Google organic’s 2.8% (a 5.1x advantage)
  • Claude users convert at 16.8%, ChatGPT at 14.2%, Perplexity at 12.4%

When AI recommends your SaaS product by name, the user arriving at your site has already been pre-qualified. They are not browsing. They are buying.

What Are SaaS Founders Experiencing with AI Invisibility Right Now?

The frustration is real, and it is widespread. One SaaS founder with strong Google rankings, positive G2 reviews, and a healthy blog discovered she had zero appearances in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for her core category query. Three competitors appeared consistently, none of them category leaders, and one had a fraction of her traffic. She had invested years in traditional SEO and content marketing, but never thought to check whether AI tools actually mentioned her product.

In some cases, the problem is not invisibility but misrepresentation: AI tools describing outdated pricing, incorrect features, or recommending a direct competitor instead. Being misrepresented may be more damaging than being absent, because 83% of buyers say they feel more confident in their final choice when using AI chatbots, even though 64% encounter inaccuracies often. Buyers trust the answer. If the answer is wrong about you, that trust works against you.

Is AI Visibility Becoming Its Own SaaS Category?

Yes, and the speed is remarkable.

The frustration around AI invisibility has spawned an entirely new SaaS category. Products specific to this category emerged in the past year to help companies track and improve AI search visibility. G2 launched a dedicated AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) category in March 2025, and it grew from 7 products to over 150 in under a year. When a problem creates its own industry that fast, the pain is real.

Why Are Smaller SaaS Competitors Winning in AI Search?

Because AI does not care about your domain authority score. This is where the connection to AEO, GEO, and LLMO becomes important. In my article Is SEO Dead? AEO/GEO/LLMO Guide for SaaS Founders, I explained how these frameworks focus on making your content extractable by AI systems, not just rankable by Google.

What smaller companies are doing differently to be visible on AI(and what you can do, too):

  • Cleaner documentation that AI models can easily parse.
  • Active Reddit threads and genuine community discussions.
  • Consistent product descriptions across all platforms.

Larger companies with bloated marketing sites and content designed purely for keyword ranking are getting ignored.

Perplexity offers another lens. As mentioned in the arXiv study, because Perplexity uses real-time web search, it achieved 2.5x better discovery rates than ChatGPT (8.3% versus 3.3%). SaaS founders who maintain current, well-structured content have a meaningful advantage on real-time AI tools, even if ChatGPT’s training data has not caught up yet.

What Should SaaS Founders Do About AI Visibility?

This article is about understanding the problem, not solving it all at once. The remaining five articles in this series will cover zero-click search, content strategy rewrites, GEO versus SEO, a practical AI citation checklist, and what vibe coding means for SaaS positioning. But there is one thing you should do right now.

Hands-On Exercise: How To Run Your First AI Visibility Audit for Your SaaS Product

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Start a temporary chat. Ask each the same question a potential buyer would ask when looking for your type of SaaS product.

For example:

  • "What is the best [your category] tool for [your ICP]?"
  • "Compare [your product] vs [competitor]"
  • "What tools do [your target audience] use for [the problem you solve]?"

Alternatively, if you are already using an SEO tool or considering investing in one, then utilize their AI Visibility Audits. For each AI response, write down:

  • Does your SaaS product appear at all?
  • Is the information accurate (pricing, features, positioning)?
  • Which competitors show up instead?
  • Do the AI tools describe your product correctly, or do they confuse it with someone else?

Buyers are making faster, higher-conviction decisions based on AI output. If that output does not include your SaaS product, you are not just missing traffic. You are missing the sale. Your audit will take ten minutes.

The rules of SaaS discovery have changed. Google rankings alone will not protect your pipeline when more than half of buyers are starting their research with AI. The good news is that this shift is still early. The founders who audit their AI visibility now, and act on what they find, will have a significant head start over those who keep optimizing only for Google.
